The French cheese board is what happens when centuries of terroir meet the art of pairing.
This is the appetizer that turns a dinner party into an event. Five cheese styles, each representing a different French tradition, arranged to guide the palate from delicate to bold. No guesswork, no apologizing for the funkier selections—just confident hosting.
🧀 INGREDIENTS: • 1 wedge soft-ripened cheese (Brie, Camembert, or similar) • 1 wedge washed-rind cheese (Époisses, Pont-l'Évêque, or similar) • 1 wedge hard cheese (Comté, Beaufort, or aged Gruyère) • 1 wedge blue cheese (Roquefort, Bleu d'Auvergne, or Fourme d'Ambert) • 1 wedge goat cheese (Chèvre log, Crottin de Chavignol, or similar) • Fresh baguette slices • Crackers or crostini • Fresh fruit (grapes, figs, or pears) • Dried fruit (apricots or dates) • Nuts (walnuts or almonds) • Honey or fruit preserves • Cornichons or olives
🥄 METHOD: 1. Remove all cheeses from refrigeration 1 hour before serving to bring to room temperature. 2. Arrange cheeses on a large wooden board or slate, spacing them evenly. 3. Start with the mildest cheese (soft-ripened) and work toward the strongest (blue), moving clockwise around the board. 4. Place accompaniments in small bowls or arrange directly on the board between cheeses. 5. Add fresh baguette slices and crackers around the perimeter. 6. Provide separate cheese knives for each cheese to prevent flavor mixing. 7. Serve and instruct guests to taste from mildest to strongest.
Save this for the next dinner party where showing up matters.
